Question about baby bok choy

Posted by catherinet 5 (My Page) on

This is my first year to grow this. I bought them as seedlings. They are pretty big now.....maybe 7" tall. How do I know when to pull them? That's what I do, right?......pull the whole plant at once? I was going to saute it with garlic and onions.
Thanks!

They're edible at any size, but people usually harvest them when they start to stand up. If yours are a baby variety that tall, you can start pulling them.

Also, check the center of the stalk to look for emerging flower buds, which means they're starting to bolt. Definitely pull them then.

The larger they get, the less tasty they are. Very large bok choy tastes watery and bland to me.

Concur, you can use anytime up to when the flower. Seven inches is large for a Baby pak choi.

RE: Question about baby bok choy

I pulled them up and we had them at dinner last night. They were very good. But........It probably cost about $12 for the four of them. (as seedlings) haha I only planted them 4 weeks ago, but they were ready to eat. This was my first time planting them, so I guess I didn't realize they were almost eating sized when I bought them. Maybe that's why the nursery hadn't sold any yet, since people might have known they were already too big?

Oh well......live and learn, right? At least they were very good!

So.....now I know. Maybe next year I'll plant them from seed.
