Mine didn't even germinate this year. This is my first year trying it, though, so i can't comment as to its relative difficulty.

Red Sails is real easy to grow. You have a problem. maybe with the seeds.

All the lettuce is about the same. I have grown probably 50 different lettuce. A few lettuce might have slight problems mostly it is with bad seed.

Red Sails is a leaf lettuce. Leaf lettuce is the easiest to grow. Try some Jericho Romaine and Nevada Batavia types for quality lettuce. Jericho is the best Romaine. Batavia types are excellent. There are several real good ones.

You might try not covering the seed. The packet I had gave as info that Red Sails did a bit better on germination if given some light, so I just made sure they contacted the soil, kept them moist, and up they came.

I have planted lettuce for three or four years now.Lettuce does need light to germinate, so do not burry the seeds. I have to keep reminding myself of that. I will sprinkle a little dirt/compost over the seeds. I am always a afraid birds with clean them out. I planted red sails and black jack. Both green and red. I liked the black jack better. Not from a taste stand point. But during and post harvest the black jack seemed to hold up better. The red sail seemed to wilt very quickly.
