You have a relatively short growing season you need to plant when you can and not worry about the bug. Use row covers until the plants start flowering if you wish to avoid the bug for as long as possible.
Yes, though maybe not a lot. I only found one reference that mentioned the SVB wasn't in pacific states, so I decided to look at the California cooperative extension service website and they mentioned the squash vine borer. Which leads me to believe they can be found in California because all of that information should be local.
thanks weirdtrv, I thought I saw something in this forum that they (svb) wasn't in Calif, so I wasn't sure. I felt bad that some of the gardeners had to go though the damage they did. I guess I will have to check for them now too :/
