What variety? Most zucchini are bush types so I don't think you could grow it vertically without damage to the plant. Even the short mini vines it grows would snap IMO and the leaf stems sure will snap.

But there are a couple of vining types.

I dont know if it can be done....BUT....if it can the square foot garden forum would probably be the place to ask.

I've attached Italian vining zucchinis to a fence with little ties (make sure they're thick/soft enough not to cut into the vines), and there's plenty of room along the stem, between leaves, to do so.

Almost all zucchinis that you'll encounter in the U.S. are bush varieties, however, unless you go out of your way to find something different.

There was a fabulous post a few years back with some photos from gardener 'snibb' on how he vertically trained a zucchini. Perhaps that thread will help you.

Lol thats the exact post that made me want to grow them vertical! I just couldnt picture where you wrap the tie around the stem of the plant. But after rereading he says every ft or so. Im very anxious to try it, so ill just kinda wait & see! They are growing strong, even against the hordes of slugs! Thank you for bringing that link up, since i had never seen that comment.
