i direct sowed broccoli seeds and got some good ones growing that are too close together. would i be able to transplant them to another area of the garden?

I would say yes. Try to get a bit of dirt with them if possible. The smaller when moved, the better. Water well and cover with vented flower pot for a couple days to reduce stress.

Agree. Probably some of them will stand the move but it will also set the moved ones back 10 days to 2 weeks.

The real problem is you often disturb the roots of the adjacent plants and kill them in the process when trying to move some so watering them all well first will help reduce the damage. That's why thinning when seeds have been over-panted is recommended instead.

But it is a good lesson learned and next time you'll know to better space the seeds. You can always add more seeds later if they don't all germinate rather than try to move some.

As long as you don't disturb the rootball too much, I would say they'll transplant just fine. Good luck!
