2014 Onions

Here in Wyoming - where we live at about 7,000' elevation we can expect snow in April, May and June - if we wait for the last frost to plant - we would never get the garden planted - haha!! We just have to plant and then protect the plants the best we can and hope for the best. These onion transplants are very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures well - we don't even cover them unless we expect a hard freeze. This photo shows the day we planted the transplants when they arrived from DixonDale Farms - a snow storm in May and how they look today. They appear to be very happy in Wyoming!?

Hi Dave - we always plant Super Star - it does awesome in here in Wyoming. This year we are trying the new variety that Dixondale Farms offers - Highlander. We are also trying Red Candy Apple and Candy. The long day varieties we planted last year were OK - but not as great as Super Star (intermediate Day Variety) so we decided to try more Intermediate Varieties this year - they are off to a great start.

How are your onions looking? We are trying to get the leaves as large as possible before they start to bulb - they appear to be coming along fine. Do you have some pics you can share?

Your onions look fabulous. I am still a lousy onion grower. a neighbor said they are easy. Ha!

Hudson,
You probably mentioned in your 2013 onion thread, but how long did last years onions last you?

RE: 2014 Onions

nugrdnnut - We were still eating Super Star the middle of May but they were deteriorating fast - we selected the best after the middle of May and ran out by June. We stored them at 40 degrees in 10# onion bags. The photo shows the new 2014 onion transplants arriving and a few of the 2013 onions in storage. We are looking forward to this years crop to compare Super Star with - Highlander, Candy, Red Candy Apple & Ailsa Craig.

Do you have photos of your onions - what variety is working for you?

RE: 2014 Onions

My onions are at the point of getting scraggly and ready to pull, they are not ready for their close-up! :) My storage onions are Copra this year and they look to be shaping up nicely. My biggest success has been in correcting the problem with onion maggots (who seemed to have a preference for my garlics and leeks over the onions) by using beneficial nematodes. All my alliums are coming out looking neat and pristine. Well, there was the vole in the sweet onions that ate about 75% of the white onions but I finally got it in a trap. Our cold spring made it so my short day onions didn't put on enough growth before bulbing was triggered, but since those are for fresh eating and I way overplanted it is OK. Oh, and I did not overlook the early feeding of nitrogen this year like I did last, and my onions are a nice size again. Cheers!
