Broccoli and cabbage for fall

Posted by garden-of-simple 5 (My Page) on

So thanks to the deer, my broccoli and cabbage are gone.

I'm in zone 5a. Fall is probably better for broccoli anyway, but I've never had success.

Should I be starting seeds now for a fall planting? Same with cabbage? I think I'd put broccoli in the garden mid august and cabbage again mid July, but that still seems too hot. Any experience on this?

All of the Zone 5 planting calendars I looked at say cabbage in mid to lat June and broccoli in mid-August. That's about the same time I use in my zone. So yes, now is when to start some of the seeds if you will be using transplants. or if you have a shady place in your garden you could direct seed them.

You could do them later of course if you are prepared to cover them as needed. Having a roll of inexpensive row cover is always a good investment.

I've been growing savoy cabbage for late fall/winter for a number of years. I'll be starting them around Jun 19 in little starter cells outside near the house. I move them to bigger pots and keep them in the pots now with the pots in the garden until they are a decent size, then I set them in the ground. The trick for me is to protect them from flea beetles and the cabbage butterfly even in the pots. I use summer weight row covers even while they're in the pots so when I set them in the ground they're fully accustomed to the heat.

I harvest my savoys in Dec and Jan. Last year two savoys made it through the first Polar vortex--minus 6 here.

I think it depends on the variety of broccoli/cabbage, but I will defer to Dave as he knows what he is talking about.

FYI, I prefer the "Packman" variety of broccoli as it is fast to mature, give good tasting nice sized heads and produces multiple side shoots.

Happy gardening!

I found this link very helpful for our Zone 5 planting:

galinas... tim does a very good job with his garden. I've shared that link on GW to help some folks out with their intensive gardening strategies!
