I need to get some floating row covers for insect protection. Does anyone have any favorite (inexpesnive!) sources? Thanks!

Get yourself some Illusion tulle at Joann Fabrics. Very wide and very cheap. I like it better than the actual row cover I purchased from a garden store. It's lightweight, nylon and you can water and get light through it easily. I use it over squash and hand pollinate to avoid the dreaded squash vine borer. Keski

Keski, I guess I can try to research this elsewhere, but how do you hand pollinate your squash? I'm very frustrated with winter squash - I like butternut squash because the vine borers leave it alone, and I can generally get acorn squash to ripen before the plants get diseased and die, but I have trouble with anything else. I'm going to try to keep my squash covered until it flowers, never thought about trying to hand pollinate.

mdfarmer- The FAQ at the top of the main page has info on hand pollinating. But basically you take the pollen from a male blossom and transfer it to a female. bart1- For summer growing insect netting or tulle will be better than row covers. Can't help you with sources. Rodney

Bart - you are looking for summer-weight insect barrier, correct? Johnny's Selected Seeds sells Agribond 15 and Gardens Alive carries a super-light full floating insect barrier. Territorial Seeds in another source as is Gurney's and Henry Fields. I've also seen insect barrier sold on amazon.com. Dave

Not sure how prices compare but i've ordered tulle from the linked source...also, they have bags for fruit... (-and good green colors that are near invisible) And i have traditional row cover from Johnny's.

Virginia's own 7 Spring Farm Supply will sell you whatever row cover you want by the foot. I use tulle a lot in summer, but keep two weights of row cover on hand for use at other times of year. Wouldn't be without it.
