Squirrels and corn

Anne Wolfley

I've lived in my house for 4 years and have never been able to harvest much corn (maybe 10% at best) because of the squirrels. It doesn't matter what kind it is - sweet or popcorn or dent corn. The little jerks wait until the corn is ready to harvest, steal it, eat it, then leave the bare cobs close to the house. It's like they're mocking me. I've thought of just planting a ton of corn, but I don't want to use up so much space in my garden when there are other plants that are more important to me (like tomatoes).

Any advice? (No advice about shooting them, please. I don't have a gun or a license and would only be able to do so in season, October through February.)
