My corn is just now silking and I need to spray the silks, but I have read where Sevin is losing its ability to control the worms and Malathion is not effective. I have used Sevin in the past with mixed results, but I would like to find a better product any suggestions? Jimnks

I only have earworm trouble on very late corn. Anyway, some people put mineral oil on silks right after pollination. I would think that footies slipped on right after pollination would work.

I also use BtK but I mix it with mineral oil from the drug store. I use a 3-1 (3 oil & 1 BtK)mix. What I do is buy a ketchup squeeze bottle from WallyMart and put the solution inside then after pollination I squirt some of the mix down into the ear right at the tip. Works great. Probably 85% success. I always do my treatment in the late evening because the wasp colony has gone home by then. DL

I've used Bt in a sprayer with great success. The sprayer has fairly good pressure, so I stick the nozzle into the middle of the silk & spray into the end of the ear. If you spray at the first appearance of silk, then respray again a week later, it will be very effective - over 90% of my corn had no ear worms. Bt is not as effective on corn borers, though, unless you spray the entire plant several times. I have not done so, since borer damage has been bearable... but if it were to become severe, I might consider it. There might not be much of an ear worm problem for me this year, my rural plot is surrounded by fields of GM corn.

I use veggy oil with pretty good success. I found 1 worm out of 4 dozen ears this year. But my corn was also, 3 weeks earlier this year. That is the best success I have ever had. I normally get worms in about 1/3rd of my crop. Probably from missing a few ears when I spray.
