I'm growing an Everglades Pumpkin Squash this year, for the first time. It gets plenty of sun and water, and the fruit (once I learned that I needed to do manual pollination) seems to be just fine. But the older leaves on the plants, around the two mounds I have built up, keep dying away. First they completely turn a lighter shade of green, then a bit of yellowing appears along the edges. After a couple weeks, this begins to turn into a dry, brown dead leaf until the entire leaf dies and I just pluck it off. I see no "saw dust" or other signs of bugs. What could be causing this? One of my neighbors recommended adding epsom salt to the soil next time I water. Thanks!

Is it only the old leaves, or is it affecting all the leaves?
|
It's common on squash that older leaves die off as the plant grows. As long as the newer growth is fine and it's producing I wouldn't worry about it.

Summer_Squash, it appears to only be the old leaves. The further down the vine I go, the better the leaves look. I just checked. Some of the decaying leaves do also have yellow spots on them. And I found two very small but already dead/yellow fruits.

Small dead fruit could simply mean they weren't pollinated. Your plant sounds normal, though it would be easier to be sure if you could post a photo.

Thanks for your help! By small dead fruit, I mean about pea sized - well before the flower opens up for pollination. If I don't just pluck it early, it turns brown and dies without ever flowering. This hasn't happened much (3-4 times). Photos posted.
