Garden needs a jump?. Molasses?

My garden which has been doing pretty well this season has yielded beautiful lettuce so far. I also see a bunch of cucumbers growing nicely and a ton of tomato flowers as well as actually tomatoes. I noticed my zucchini, squash plants are producing flowers but the plants aren't as big compared to my father in laws garden. We have the same soil we used 10-10-10 fertilizer, humus and manure peatmoss. All organic no pesticides etc. I used blackstrap molasses in the beginning. I just can't pinpoint why my garden looks like it needs a boost. I see the celery tops are coming nice, scallions, parsley, basil. It's just odd how the tomato plants and zucchini/squash aren't as "strong" big. Is there anything I should organically use to boost them?

Sure if you really think they need something (garden comparisons often lead to invalid conclusions) then just side dress them with fresh compost or well composted manure. There are also many meals that work well - cottonseed meal, alfalfa meal, etc I don't recommend blood meal at this stage as it is too easy to over-dose with it.

PS: what organic 10-10-10 did you use? Just curious.

Comparing your FIL's garden and yours, are there any differences in topography? Microclimate? Watering practices? Plant spacing?

I highly doubt you've got the same soil as your FIL unless you are both growing in raised beds with storebought soil and have root barriers so that the plant's roots have no access to the native soil. Even in my suburban backyard I've got different soil in different areas and the same plants will grow differently in those different soils.

But even IF the soil is the same there are other factors such as Slimy_Okra has said. All these things combine together so you really shouldn't compare gardens. If yours is growing well then that's what matters.

I've got one raised bed that is literally 3 feet from my other three. It's been treated exactly the same as the others, but the plants never do as well. I've yet to figure it out, have even removed and replaced all the dirt. This is the bed closest to the garage side door, and I'm beginning to wonder if the previous owner of the house used to walk out and dump something there.

You may never know why your FIL gets different results. That or he's got a secret he's not sharing, LOL

My FIL is a few blocks away from my house same raised beds and soil/conditioner as he has done the same setup to my raised beds as his. We get the same amount of sun, water etc. It's weird that his is boosted compared to mine mindboggling.

How old are his and yours? If his were built before yours, older soil usually means more conditioned if fed year after year.

Also, do you water the same? Do you get your seedlings at the same time and plant at the same time? Are they the same varieties? There's just too many factors.

I'm with Rodney. As long as yours are performing well, who cares?

They were not from seed but started from small plants from a local farm. The previous homeowner has had the garden for over 20+ years. The past 3 years since I owned the house my FIL and I conditioned the soil the same. We water the same planted at same time.

I would say your FIL is doing something you dont know. Sometimes people are like that, accept it. There is a new product out called Dunkels, google it and give it a try, Im using it and its wonderful. Price is fair.
