Frost Blankets

One really has to enjoy gardening to garden in Wyoming where we live at about 7,000' elevation - IMO. We can expect snow as late as April, May, June and even July and as early as August - haha. If we waited for the last frost - we would never plant a garden! We just have to plant - then protect the plants the best we can and hope for the best.

This time of year - mother nature warms things up and gets the blossoms out and then zaps them with frost and kills them dead! We have to watch the weather close every month - all it takes is one unprotected night to ruin a great garden. It froze last night and will freeze again tonight!

Thanks to these frost blankets - we can cover the plants and usually not loose our crops. We had to cover our Strawberries, Raspberries, Beans, Potatoes and squash. The rest of the warm weather crops are in the GH. Nice to have some cold weather crops that don't have to be covered - unless there is a hard freeze.

What are all the sprinklers in the background?

Although it's not as bad here (much further north of you but only at 1800 ft elevation), you're right that waiting for last frost often isn't practical. We had a light frost in early June this year and we may get one again in early September. But we've recorded frost in every month of the year at some point, and back in 2004, we did have frost in every month of the year!
Average soil temperatures here are stuck in the 50s. It's difficult to grow anything in the nightshade family (besides potatoes) without protection of some kind.

The sprinklers are watering our alfalfa field. We have an awesome gravity fed watering system in our area - we have hand lines but many farmers use wheel lines. There is a natural lake in the mountains that feeds the system from May until October - cold clear water - 24/7 - Love it !! One of many wonderful places to live for a great quality of life if you like rural living - like we do!
