I carve out the sprouts using a sharp knife, so I get a 2" piece of the sweet potato with each sprout. This minimizes shock after planting out.

Just use your thumb to knock off the slip from the skin. Unlike regular potatoes, you don't need any of the "meat" or skin of the sweet potato.

well I have been doing that.. But I put the tip in water to develop the roots... so it takes longer right????

I would think so. I've only grown them twice and each time I just stuck the slip into the soil. Pulled out some pretty good tubers a few months later.

No need for either water or a piece of potato although neither hurt. But you sure don't want the whole potato planted. Just snap off the slip at the skin level and plant it. Keep it well watered until it perks up.
