How long for zucchini buds to fruit?

Posted by Springy none (My Page) on

I noticed today that there are about 12- 15 little flowers/buds on each zucchini plant. I have been searching the net and it looks like they are quick to grow, a week or so? is that from a full flower or from a bud? Just curious on timing.

All depends on the weather, but yeah, you're probably a week or two away from seeing squash. When you do, check daily. Those buggers grow fast.

Thanks! I also meant to ask this-- I saw online that only the female flowers produce fruit-- what is the ratio usually like for male:female flowers? Am I safe to guess half will be female or is the ratio totally different?

Gosh, I've never really paid attention. I guess probably 50/50.

The ratio of male to female flowers vary. Don't be surprised if all the ones you currently see turn out to be all male.

Buds can be at different stages. And may take a week to bloom. Then if the flower is pollinated, you will see a growing zuke in 3 days or so. If not pollinated it will shrivel and die. So from pollinated flower to harvestibe zuke can take about a week, if you want it to be tender.
