I have been keeping away the deer with a scarecrow motion sensor in my garden for a few years now. They still do damage to my fruit trees. I can't have 10 or more of them scattered about! I enlisted co-worker that is a deer hunter and I got a permit to kill off season. Before I get chastised from the no kill folks, he only kills to eat, he is not a trophy hunter.... He wanted to see when they were coming and all so he asked me to put up his game cam. Low and behold! The deer come to the edge of the garden and the prints stop there! When I looked at the night pictures, (infrared) I see a deer then The next picture I see a white butt leaving the scene of the crime!

He/she flipped you off, huh? :) Must have been a 'bad hair' day. You never want you picture taken on those days. Does the camera used have flash or was it just the clicking that scared the deer off? Dave

Deer shouldn't spook to the infrared flash since it's not in their visible spectrum, so yes, they likely spooked to a clicking noise or a red "activity" light on the front of the cam. I've had deer spook to the green focus beam light on my digital camera from 100 yards away. Turning the beam off in low light makes it harder to focus, but what else are you gonna do? Anyway, they likely will get used to whatever alarmed them and go about pigging out on your crops. At least you'll have lots of neat photos. ;)

I have an electric fence around my garden. One trick I use is to put a spark plug on one of the metal posts and attach a wire to the fence so that the spark plug sparks every time the fence clicks on. The spark makes a very audible pop. I don't know if it is the flash of light or the popping sound, but the deer avoid it like the plague. Raccoons ignore it so I put up a wire 6 inches off the ground to deter the masked bandits.

It must be the Game Cam! I turned it off Sat. to take the card out to download the pics to my PC. I got busy with other things and forgot to put the card back in and turn it back on. Sunday morning I went out to turn it back on and check the garden. I found tracks all the way down a row of peas. The tops were nibbled on a lot of the plants. When I checked this morning the tracks stopped at the edge. I guess they can hear the camera or the lights spook them. No Dave, it doesn't have a flash, but it does have a little red LED light comes on when it is activated. It may make a noise, but I can't hear it.
