Squash/Zucchini question

This is my first year growing veggies and I'm concerned about my squash and zucchini plants. I've done a lot of research on both and I know that a female flower will not produce if it's not pollinated which will lead to it rotting/falling off. Well what about my female flowers doing that without the bloom ever opening? It's happened to both plants...I'll see a new growing female flower so I watch it closely so I can hand pollinate. It gets to a point, stops growing, and then turns brown and rots off. I know for a fact that the bloom hasn't opened and most of these aren't even to that point yet...they're much too small. Is this normal or are my plants lacking something and stressed? I must add that they have both produced 1 veggie each so far so there have been females that get passed that point.
