broccoli and cauliflower-no veggie yet?

This is the first time we planted broccoli and cauliflower; usually stick to tomatoes, beans and zucchini. Anyway, the plants are huge-about 2 1/2 ft high and 3 ft wide, yet there is no sign of anything developing in the center. Any ideas why? Is it too soon?

Perhaps too much fertilizer?

Mine usually start heading up a bit too early in response to cold spring weather followed by warm spell. I've cut broccoli side shoots for awhile now and replanted broccoli 2 more times. We like it a lot!

A few years ago I spread a lot of rabbit manure in our zucchini bed and had huge golf-umbrella sized leaves and very little fruit in comparison though what fruit set was good. The picking was a bit more difficult and visitors commented about our dinosaur plants. Ha, ha.

I skipped growing zucchini last year other than one plant in a smallish pot and just bought it at the farm stand. This year I was stingy with the compost and no manure. Plants are just starting to grow fruit now 4" in length, so going to grilling size soon!

When did you plant them out? Mine went in the ground as 5 week old transplants in mid May. Most of the broccoli has headed up, and I started eating it about a week ago. Cauliflower takes longer.

Last year, I didnt get main heads from any of my broccoli, just side shoots, but they kept going until frost. I think the plats were stressed from being in small containers to long.
