How can I train my watermelon plants to grow towards a trellis?

I have some newer watermelon plants that are doing great. I am trying to grow them up a trellis this year though (sugar babies) and they are in raised rows which means the trellis is about 8" away from the base of the plant.

Some of the plants are really doing well, but they are taking off in the opposite direction of the base of the trellis. Would it hurt/help to start tying strings to try to direct them to grow in the direction of the trellis? How do I do that without hurting the plants?

Tie them loosely to the trellis with twine, being sure not to tie them so tight that it cuts the stems. They'll eventually get the message and grab on by themselves. Plan to support the melons when they start forming.
