Summer lettuce - my experiment in So Cal

Here is my 3rd batch of lettuce this year, in Los Angeles/Pasadena area. It's not much, but enough for a wrap or hamburger now and then. They seem to be happy under the edible luffa trellis.

Wow, that is some happy lettuce! Do you have problems with aphids? My leafy stuff got hit so hard, I wouldn't grow it again. Though I've been spraying everything with neem this year, and so far I haven't seen a solitary aphid in the garden. It's encouraging enough that I might try lettuce again.

I'm trying some lettuce that they grow in Hawaii. I just planted some starts last week. They are shaded for now, but seem to be doing well in high 80s heat! Nancy

Nancy, what's the variety if you don't mind me asking? I'm tempted to give it a try.

loribee2 I guess I didn't save the tag! I usually do!
It started with an M and I got them at Harmony in Sebastopol, so they were quite pricey!
If they work out, I'm hoping to get some seed next year.
I'm also going to try a lettuce tray in the shade. I DO like lettuce in my summer salads! Nancy

^We go to Hawaii every year...most farmers markets there sell Manoa lettuce so maybe that's it?

Not from Hawaii, but Jericho, Nevada and Mainland Girl are doing very well so far. I'll start the next batch Aug. 1. I guess that'll be the ultimate test!

I may experiment with some lettuce again. I had success growing it before, but the aphids loved it. I picked a head of curly leaf, brought it in the house and immersed it in water, and about 1,000 aphids came swimming out. Gave me such a bad case of heeby-jeebies that I threw it away, pulled up all the lettuce and haven't planted it again. LOL

I was thinking about a smooth leaf type like romaine or maybe spinach, then doing a better job about spraying with neem right from the start. I've been better about spraying my zucchini this year and haven't seen a solitary aphid yet. Normally, I'm having to hose colonies off the new growth by now.

I'm just not one of those people who can shrug off the possibility of eating a bug. If I want "protein", I'd rather get it from a nice piece of steak. LOL
