sweet corn question

This year my corn has a main stalk and usually one or 2 smaller stalks coming from the base of the main stalk. I had a few of these last year, but seems about 1/3 of the corn has the extra stalks this year. I don't remember if they produced ears or not. I think that I should cut these off and leave the main stalk. Is this a common occurrence with certain varieties or environment conditions? I just don't remember this happening in the past.
