Nolo bait is on my list of things I have to buy this year. I would get plants going for the winter under plastic and the grasshoppers would mow them down. This year I will have nolo bait.

Nosema locusta or something latin like that. It's a microorganism (fungus?) that kills grasshoppers. Sorta kinda like Bt for hoppers. The thing is for it to be most effective you have to get it down while the grasshoppers are very young. It did work for me, or seemed to. Do a web search for Nolo bait, you're sure to find more info.

I've also read that regular flour sprinkled on the leaves of plants they like messes up their digestive systems. I sprinkled some on my coleus, but there's really no way for me to see if it works. The tiny ones I can squish, but the big ones are hard to deal with. Nolo is a bit expensive.

To squish - one hand under leaf, one hand above - clap!

There are baby grasshoppers all over my yard and garden. They seem to especially enjoy the eggplant leaves, which are now full of holes and raggedy. They've also been devouring petunia blooms. The little critters are fast and hard to squish, and when they are on the thorny eggplants -- ouch! The grownups prefer to munch on the citrus tree leaves. I've never seen so many before. I will look into that Nolo bait, may be worth it for me this year.
