Asparagus....weeds!

My asparagus is long gone except for a rogue sprig here and there that I usually consume during a lunchtime stroll through the garden.
Some crazy weed has taken over! It is mostly pretty easy to pull, but with the gus growing tall, it's kinda hard to get in there and weed the area.
I'm wondering if, when I cut it down (Oct or Nov), can I cover it with cardboard for a couple of months to kill the weeds, or will the cardboard affect the growth of the gus?
I have tried mulching with tons of leaves, but then I got gus beetles! Last year I pulled back the leaves, sprayed with sevin around January, replaced the leaves and had very little problem with the beetles.
How do YOU deal with weeds in the gus bed and beetles??????? Nancy
