Asparagus....weeds!

My asparagus is long gone except for a rogue sprig here and there that I usually consume during a lunchtime stroll through the garden.
Some crazy weed has taken over! It is mostly pretty easy to pull, but with the gus growing tall, it's kinda hard to get in there and weed the area.
I'm wondering if, when I cut it down (Oct or Nov), can I cover it with cardboard for a couple of months to kill the weeds, or will the cardboard affect the growth of the gus?
I have tried mulching with tons of leaves, but then I got gus beetles! Last year I pulled back the leaves, sprayed with sevin around January, replaced the leaves and had very little problem with the beetles.
How do YOU deal with weeds in the gus bed and beetles??????? Nancy

there should be enough room between gus clusters that you should be able to hoe the weeds. Use one of those scraper hoes. I do use leaves, but I think for this wood chips are best.

Cardboard for a couple of months won't kill the weeds, just smother some of the surface growth. And yes it will affect the crowns badly.

Unfortunately gus beds need to be weeded by hand or hoe. If you do it on a regular basis you can usually keep ahead of the weeds. Especially if you get to them before they go to seed.

I too use shredded leaves to mulch all my gus beds with. I've only had a minimal problem with gus beetles 1 time so I'm not convinced there is any correlation between using leaves and the beetles - it's more coincidence.

Well, I went off to Hawaii for 2 weeks and was lucky to get my daughter to at least water! Forget the weeding! LOL
Everything is too close together right now to get a hoe in there.
Once my lovely fog comes back, I'll spend a few mornings working on it. Thanks! Nancy
PS no more vacations during garden season!

Ahhh, the gift of the Hawaii weed gods! I assume you noticed all the lush growth over there? They want to share it with you. :)

I was just called away at the beginning of June for a family emergency. By the time I got back two weeks later, the weeds had attacked and conquered everywhere. The asparagus bed is full of violets.

Fortunately, when the stalks die back in November, it's possible to do some serious weed work in the bed.

Yes, Dave . The Hawaii weed gods got me good! LOL
I wish could bring back some of their non-weeds! Nancy
