Planting Root veggies -Fall Harvest zone 2?

I live in southern Canada and the idea of having fresh carrots and maybe turnips sounds really appealing to me. I've read on this forum that veggies planted in summer for fall harvest turn out sweeter which makes sense as the sugars condense... like in sweet wine where the grapes are picked after a frost I guess. So my question is, here fall lasts 2-3 weeks and then it's frost time, and then it's snow time lol. It's like Boom Boom. The leaves don't even turn colours. They just go from green to on the ground. Halloween outfits that are very large and baggy are popular here cuz the kids need room under them for heavy clothes, as it gets dangerously cold for little fingers and toes around that time.

Is this a place I could pull off having a fall crop? When should I plant carrots, and how much space do they need? How fast do they grow? I could do without turnips, but I really think having fresh carrots would be great! Thanks in advance!

I planted my fall carrots and beets on July 1st so you need to hurry. Turnips likely need to be planted up there too...July 23rd here.

Carrots need to stand 2 or 3 inches apart. Rows need to be 12 inches apart.

Where exactly do you live? In Saskatchewan, carrots should have already been planted, although it is not too late to seed now. Turnips should also go in within the next week. Keep in mind that most fall veggies tolerate frost, so don't go by the first frost date. Go by the first -5 degrees C date as this is usually when those veggies start to decline unless protection is provided. Beets can be seeded in mid to late July.

There are lots of non-root fall veggies that can be planted as late as late August here. Look at the DTM and add 2 weeks plus typical time to germination, then count backwards.
