Removing lower leaves of cabbage?

Hi,
Can I remove all the lower level leaves from cabbage (the one that is touching ground/soil)? They are either yellow or partially eaten by slugs/caterpillars and some of the leaves are decaying. Does removing these and other lower leaves damage the plant? Cabbage is forming tight ball at the center.
I did search in this forum, but did not find links. If you find one please post it.
Thanks in advance for reasonable suggestions/advice.
Anna

Why not just leave them as bait for the buggies so they don't eat the rest of the plant?
