opinions on pruning melon vines..?

Our watermelon and cantaloupes have flowers all over them - nice enough; but the vines have responded a bit too well to our recent rains.

All we have found so far is a fleeting reference from Gene Logsdon - who suggests pruning vine tips after perhaps eight (8) per runner.

Anyone got any suggestions about cautions - or technique.?

Appreciations in advance.!

I agree. Let them run.

Well; Thanks for those opinions. I guess I ought to clarify a bit better....

They are growing _very_ well, thank you, now we need to encourage a little restraint.

If we let them run, we won't be able to get into that area of the garden till after frost - we'd like to get to some of the melons before then, eh.

I know how you feel. I have thought for several years now that I need to build a rolling scaffold system over my melon patch so I can swoop over the melon patch and search for the ripe melons without walking on the vines.

However, lazyness or practicality has so far overruled inventiveness and ambition, so I usually take a long stick or broken fishing rod and move a vine or two far enough that I can step into the patch without stepping on a vine.

Can you "re-direct" your errant vines? when our vines grow "outta bounds" I just turn the vine around so it'll cross back over it's self (ie when it's about a foot too-long I curve the vine back to the center) My melon beds are 3 feet wide, and 12 feet between mounds (planted against the house & patio) in what would be wasted space otherwise) the vines can fill in thier alloted area and I can reach them all.
