Hello all, I've grown gorgeous potatoes for 3 years, hilling as is common. People kept telling me to try no-till, to use hay. This year, I did. Grossness has ensued. Slimy vines (at the bottom), slimy hay, rotted potatoes. LOTS of worms (good, right?). Did I use too much hay, or was there too much rain? Can I compost the vines and rotted potatoes? Is there now perhaps a nasty bug or fungus in the soil that I need to worry about for next season? Thanks for any input you might have.

I've used the hay method for years, and we've had nothing but rain. My potatoes are late this year, but I see sound vines and a few nice-looking tubers. Hard to say what happened.

It appears that it was the hay. Look at the difference between those hilled, and those that were covered with hay. Same amount of heavy rain, vastly different spuds. Here, the nasty potatoes (hay). This is a good sample. Plenty of others were rotted.

Next time hill the white ones and slime the red ones. Red ones are good growers.

Thanks Wayne. So it was the heavy, rain-soaked hay that did the spuds in? I can compost the leaves and rotted taters, or no?

Just hoping someone can tell me if I can compost the vines and rotted spuds/ I wouldn't want to introduce anything nasty into the pile. I really don't know whether to toss them or compost them. Thanks!
