It must be July

I knew it would come eventually. The garden has been going great guns all year, but trouble always shows up in its time.

Just last night I spotted, out of nowhere: the first cucumber beetles of the year - but none at the beetle lure. The first squash bug eggs - can't spot the progentitors themselves. Powdery mildew on melons and squash, despite regular applications of fungicide.

And of course Japanese beetles swarming everywhere for the last 2 weeks.

It's 100 degrees already and only going up. Must be July.

Sorry to hear your troubles. I understand things getting worse when it gets hot. I had to yank my prized squash plants one by one because of the dang stink bugs. I tried to keep them under control by squashing them daily. Just too dang many of them! I read if you don't grow any cucurbits for a year it would help immensely. So hard to do!

I'd still love to trade places with you. Could not crack 70 degrees today. Low of 43 in my yard this morning. Hail and thunderstorms yesterday. 55 mph winds today (following 65 mph winds just a week ago). It is July in Saskatchewan though - it isn't snowing.

I've been lucky, our severe lack of rain must be keeping our Japanese beetles down. I've only seen a handful so far. Ridiculously hot though, I probably am not watering my raised beds often enough (every couple days). I hope the weatherman is right, and it cools down to 85 on Saturday!

So far so good here despite the temps. Or do squirrels count?
Just wanted to offer my sympathy.
I would soooo gladly trade Saskatchewan weather. For about a week. 101 today, 98 tomorrow, 100 Friday and 102 Saturday. Possible pop up storms,
weather extremes, yuck. Hang in there

It's just July, perfectly normal.

As for the JBs, we're in D1 drought and I've never seen so many of them. What does seem to discourage them is temps over 100. They go to ground until it cools off to 90 or so.

ltilton, I used to live in SE Pa. I sold Japanese beetle traps where I worked. They worked great! Have you tried them? I'd give almost anything to enjoy 70 degrees without humidity!!!! We've been down south for 23 years after living in New Jersey. It was cool to live here for a long time. Now it's old hat! I miss the lack of humidity. Too hot here too. 93-99 lately. We had TS Debby dump about 15 inches of rain. Thank God we didn't get flooded out! Lot of people are suffering because of it. They've lost everything. So sad! Anyway, I miss the cool weather. Thankfully we have a long spring and summer here.

Gah, It's 11 AM here, and the thermometer just hit 97 degrees. Wonder how much more it will go up.

I mean I realize that we are at the height of the solar maximum, when solar output and sunspots are at their peak, but this is getting unbearable.

I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't garden like they do in Texas, spring crop, fall crop, and just heat lovers through July and August. Course I'd have to make a couple high tunnels to extend my seasons a couple months like they have down in Texas.

It was like this last year, and I'm thinking that next year will be like this too, if we look at the historical context. In 1930's, 1953-55, and in the late 80's we have had hot dry spells like this before, exceptional droughts. This year's heat and lack of rain mirrors '54 (from what I'm told).

The earth's weather system is SO complex though. You take solar output, el nino, la nina, The arctic oscillation, the north atlantic oscillation, and then put them all together, and only when each one of them line up in just the right way, we get murderous conditions here.

This year reminds me of 2005 - we got a very bad localized drought then. This year it's just a lot more widespread.

On average, the hottest part of the season here is the 10 days between 7/8 and 7/18.
