using your own potatoes to plant -- risky or not?

I know some people just use their potatoes from the year before to plant (all my neighbors do, anyway) and some buy only certified tubers to plant.

Iv'e got some blank spots in my potato rows (poor germination 3rd year in a row -- time to find a new supplier!), and some potatoes left from last year that are growing in storage. Was thinking about filling in with them.

Opinions -- is it worth the risk of introducing disease into the potato bed? How risky is it? Is it too late to get any production from planting now anyway? Last year first frost was September 7th, but some years it's not until October, which would give 90 days.
