Broccoli, Brussel Sprout Plants in July

Some of you may remember we built replacement raised beds this spring and got our garden off to a slow start. We already had seedlings that were started under lights, so we added those to the garden. We've been able to keep eating Romaine Lettuce, because the variety was called 'Jericho' and doesn't bolt in the heat. I would say that has been a success, because we are still eating it.

We went quite awhile with Bok Choy, but one of the plants bolted.

Unfortunately, the Broccoli and Brussel Sprout plants just barely grew for the first 3 weeks and we lost a few, but we still have some that have now put on some growth.

I have no experience with broccoli still being around in July. Can I expect that if I leave the plants in the garden the entire summer, that in the fall they will produce heads? Or are they just useless at this point?

What about the Brussel Sprouts? They can grow the whole season and develop sprouts going into the fall, right?

I'm just debating whether to pull the whole bed out and either do a cover crop or start something else for the fall.

I'm having the same debate with myself about some sprouting broccoli from spring. Now that the fall broccoli seedlings are up and growing, keeping the old plants seems like a bad idea. They are too big for row covers, so I'd have to spray them with Bt regularly and I don't think they will be worth the hassle.

Around here spring-planted brussels sprouts always blast (produce loose, leafy sprouts) because they mature in hot weather. If your plants have held their fire this long, they will probably start budding soon. I suggest staking the plants, even if they seem sturdy now. In my experience, upright plants produce much better than those than tilt.

Thanks Planatus. We didn't plant out brassica transplants until May 3rd, which was pretty late. And I haven't' been able to start anything for the fall yet. The Brussels Sprouts are still short. I'll get a photo later today.

Is it too late to start seed for brassicas for the fall?

I started cauliflower [two varieties to space it out] on June 21st and about 5 broccoli of two varieties. then i started the main fall broccoil on July 4th. I have 3 varieties to space it out some.

Thank you Wayne! I guess it's not too late, if I get cracking. Good luck with your fall crop! :-)
