What kind of Fungus is growing on my Squash?

Jessica Johannesen

I've grown squash for a couple years and never seen this before. It seemed to appear overnight, it looks like sand but when i poked it with a stick it was goopy under the sandy texture.

I cut off the diseased portion of the plant because i didn't want it to spread but now i want to know what it was, and how i can possibly prevent it in the future, or how i could have treated it...

any help?

Are you sitting down? I have something very disturbing to tell you.
    It's not a fungus... it's a slime mold!
I don't know how damaging, if at all, it is to your garden. I'd do some Google'ing.

Maybe this will help. It, evidently, is not harmful to the plant at all. No fungicide is needed based on this article.
