That variety is gynoecious, an all-female cucumber. It's meant to be grown alongside a pollinator variety that has male flowers.

At least one other poster here has reported the same thing. Obviously, Burpee isn't making the requirements for this variety sufficiently well known.

Thank you for pointing me to the other thread. It is a similar experience. Like uscjusto, I am confused how any of the female flowers were pollinated if this variety is gynoecious. I have few neighbors and they are not the gardening type.

Am I correct in assuming that gynoecious varieties will produce a limited number of male blooms?

Another disappointing year for cucumbers.

Last year it was powdery mildew. I managed to keep that under control this year, but now I managed to select the wrong variety. Hopefully my third attempt will yield better results.

I think the key is to grow more cucumbers with a variety of types. I only grew 2 plants of the same variety and 1 of them died from slugs.

So I'd say a 2 cucumber harvest is a good thing, considering the circumstances.

Those Burpless Cucumbers are a fabulous variety. My favorite cucumbers that I grow each year and have for years. But no pollination problems here as I always grow other varieties of cukes also.

If you want to try an all female variety of cucumbers that does not require any pollination to set, try Camilla. Developed for greenhouse growing but grow perfectly fine outside in the garden.

The problem is that people didn't know they were getting an all-female variety. I'm looking in the official Burpee catalog they sent out this year and the description for Sweet Burpless Hybrid reads:

"55 days. Sweet, mild-tasting, 10" fruits on high-yeilding, disease-resistant plants."

Burpee is not describing this variety correctly. There are now 4 people in the past few days having issues with this variety of cucumber.
