| I have one hill of jack o lantern pumpkins that are going plumb ape and growing everywhere at the rate of about a foot a day on each stem.
There are blooms and baby pumpkins everywhere. I only need a dozen of so mature pumpkins. How much can I trim this thing back and what is the proper way to stop the continued growth of each stem? Thanks Jim |

| Not an expert, but I read in the Garden Primer that you can cut the ends of the vines after just one pumpkin has set. This is how to grow giant pumpkins too, it helps the plant put more nutrients into the pumpkins than growing the plant bigger. Good luck! |

| The giant pumpkin growers dont cut the main or secondary vines, only the tertiary ( the shoots that come off of the side shoots if you will) they do prune off the fruits though, so the sugars and energy fro all those leaves on the huge vines go into less but bigger fruits. You can trim your vines, but I would reccomend just training it to go where you want instead. Pinch off any more pumpkins as they appear so te ones you have on the vines get nice and big. Pruning the ends of the vines will most likely encourage the plant to produce more side shoots anyway, and won't really solve your space issue. |

| I have done a ton of research on this as I have about 11 pumpkin plants that have yet to start to vine, yet I know when they do I'm going to be in trouble! Here is a site that I found helpful that tells you the proper way to prune the vines. |
