Squash plant yellow color... how to correct?

Hi,

I have a squash plant that looks different from the rest (see attached, arrow). Leaves are not a dark green, more of a yellow. The yellowish plant was planted in Miracle Grow garden soil, manure and peat moss while the other (green) plant was planted in Scott's potting soil a week after the yellow plant.

To attempt to correct the yellowish plant I've ceased watering for a week and added two tbsp of Jobes Organics granular fertilizer.

If you have a suggestion on what I should do next or what I should have done in the last few weeks I'd appreciate reading it! Thanks.

Dave

Are they the same variety of squash? Aside from the lighter color, the plant looks very healthy. Not sure how long ago you gave it the fertilizer. It could just need some time to kick in.

The first thing that comes to mind when I see that plant is it needs a shot of nitrogen (yellowing leaves can indicate other problems but the most common one a lack of nitrogen).

You mentioned you gave it some granular organic fertilizer. The thing about using solid forms of organic fertilizer in a smallish pot is that the nutrients in it must be broken down my soil life which is generally not quite as active in a pot that doesn't use compost as part of its medium.

If you want to stay the organic route, try giving it a shot of higher nitrogen fish based liquid fertilizer. This'll be more immediately available to the plant.

The yellowish plant was planted in Miracle Grow garden

There is your cause. MG Garden Soil says on the bag Not for Use in Containers. It compacts, drains poorly, and retains too much water leading to root suffocation and root rot and yellowing of the leaves. It is intended only for use mixed well into existing garden beds.

Scott's Potting soil isn't much better but it doesn't compact as quickly. Still you will likely have problems with that plant further down the line.

Container plants do best by far in soil-less potting mixes. Check all the discussions on the Container Gardening forum about the various recommended container mixes to use and the ones to avoid.

Both plants are small enough that they could still be transplanted to containers containing beneficial mixes if you wish.

I had hopped mixing the MG with peat moss and manure would have made the soil okay to use in a container. I am planning to transplant into a bed this weekend so hopefully the plant will improve after that point. I sprinkled with a nitrogen fertilizer earlier today.

Thanks for all the help.

Dave
