Hi, I'm new to gardening (as an adult) and I have this gypsy pepper plant (potted 6 weeks ago) that seems to be doing pretty well. I have about 3 full-sized peppers on my plant, and and they all look like they are blushing purple at the bottom. The tag I have shows green, yellow, orange, and red peppers. Not purple. Is it possible that I just got a different plant or different variety from what the tag says, or can you expect purple to pop up in any pepper? It looks exactly like the ones in the picture except for the color. Is it possible they have a disease that would have caused them to blush purple at the bottom? This is actually my biggest concern, as I have no real problem with purple peppers. Purple rocks. My 6-year old niece will be thrilled. Also, do purple pepper versions taste any different from non-purple? I would assume that you would use them like any other variety of pepper, I guess. Thanks,

Assuming it isn't BER (Blossom End Rot) which you should recognize as such since it is a soft rotted bottom end then it is just normal color shading as it matures toward red or orange. All multi-color sweet peppers go through various color transformations as they mature and purple is one of those normal stages. Some darken even toward black, some develop streaks and some remain green. And yes all the colors are used the same and taste the same. Otherwise could you post a photo please as description only can be very misleading. Dave

I'll chime in a bit, but pics are paramount. Like Dave said, BER is a possibility, especially since you say it's on the bottom. But more likely would be sunburn... which is nothing to worry about except cosmetics. Kevin

Another thing that can cause purpling in green peppers is sudden exposure to cool weather (< 50 degrees F) but that would be unusual at this time of year.

Yes I agree I need to put up a photo. I reorganized my office and now can't find some things (lol) like my camera and the card for it. I'll steal my husband's iphone and take some pictures to post. About the weather- it hasn't been too cool for sure. Upper 80s or more every day, alternating with days of constant rain, which doesn't do anything to cool anything off- just makes the weather soupy and uncomfortable. Not sure about sunburn. I had considered BER but again I'll get photos up soon. Thanks!
