Maybe it was scared off by something? You're lucky! What kind of fence do you have? Sometimes running a wire several feet out from a fence won't let them get the momentum they need, so you might try doing that.
It knows where some food is now, so be on the lookout!

They say deer jump up to 7'. I have had to only go 6' high to stop them from jumping mine (knocking on wood now). On my last fence I followed the lead of all my neighbors with gardens and bought sturdy 6' metal posts and used a few rounds of twine tied around the garden up to the 6' height to keep them out.

I just finished building a more permanent fence (we are calling it a fortress) that goes up to 6' with wires strung between the 6' 4x4 wooden posts to create the top 2' of the height. If you use something like wire, tie ribbon or fabric strips to it so the deer can see it clearly though.

I am not sure where you live, but here I am bordered on 3 sides by woods that go back a ways and are loaded with deer. Deer in the garden is very common if you don't actively keep them out. They usually chomp my tomatoes and strangely enough my squash plants, nothing else though.

Our fence is only 4' high, but I think what keeps the deer out of ours is the fact that the whole thing (about 20x30') is filled with trellises and wire cages.
The wires on top are a good idea Kali. And like you said, just make sure you put something on them (some sort of tape, etc.) so the deer can see them.........or you might end up with a deer stuck in your fence! :(

I've been lucky the deer have left my garden alone. They get in and go to the back where I don't have anything planted and bed down. They seem to feel safe back there and they haven't bothered any of my plants. They seem to prefer the coastal grass I have growing around the garden.
