Out of curiosity, anything on the outside of the tomato like a brown spot on the bottom? That would indicate a calcium deficiency - i.e. blossom rot. A handful of gypsum will usually cure that. I usually do that at planting time though which isn't really any help this season for you - but maybe next year. Anyone do it after they are planted to "cure" BR? I'd imagine it would have to be thoroughly watered to get it down. Gypsum is slow moving, at least in my clay soil - hence dropping it at planting time.

It may be BER as mention but it could also be nothing but a problem at pollination time or fruit worm damage. The very first fruit off the plant often have issues simply because of the weathe when the plant was young and set those first fruit.

Either way there sure isn't any reason to pull the plants. The later fruit should be fine.

It is blossom end rot - BER --only it is "internal" BER. May not have any external evidence.

Same management as for the more common, also more obvious, BER. The most critical thing is evenly moist soil/potting mix.

Whaf about blackheart disease of tomatoes?

There was no outer sign on one of them but the stem end had a black spot the size of the stem on the other one. We have another plant with BER. I thought it might be due to the unstable weather. I didn't find anything about black heart disease although it seems I heard of it manyyearsago. Thanks for the info. Maybe I should wait and see how the next ones are. Where would one-time gypsum? We have clay soil with lots of shale, added compost and munched with pine needles.

Black heart disease of tomato is another name for internal BER. Causes are the same: Calcium not transported to where it should be.
