I have a San Marzano tomato plant that was beautiful, but quickly got leaf spot. It has about 30 developing green tomatoes on it. Usually, the leaf spot doesn't happen so early in the season, so my tomatoes have time to ripen. I think the leaves will be gone in a couple weeks. Will all those green tomatoes ripen eventually? Should I shade the plant after the leaves are gone? Thanks.

unlikely. you are in Michigan too, and we have had about 7 days around 70, and only 5 or 6 days above 80 this month. san marzano needs more heat than the varieties usually grown in Michigan. I grew it 6 years, never a good crop. If you want paste toms, try opalka.

Thanks glib. I'm in central Indiana. I've grown them here for a couple years with great success. I think the problem this year is the occasional heavy rains, followed by nighttime temps in the 50's. I guess I'll use the unripe tomatoes in my green tomato casserole. .....so it's not a complete loss. I'll check out the opalka. I'm really tired of the habit of the Romas. I love the uprightness of the San Marzanos.

Most of my tomatoes got septoria leaf spot after two days of cool rain a couple of weeks ago. The tomatoes are continuing to ripen, and the crop looks pretty good. I'm trying Plum Regal paste tomato this year for its blight resistance. It had very little early blight and was growing like a champ until the septoria episode. The fruits are bigger than Romas and there are lots of them.

Yes, the days in the 70 are followed by nights in the 50s. We had 45F last week. San Marzano is a southern mediterranean variety, this is no climate for it. Opalka is a polish variety.
