Where are you located? Maybe you can plant the warmer crops in 9A like tomatoes and squash.

Cabbage. Cauliflower, Broccoli, Collards and Beets can be planted now for fall crops even in zone 7b. You may be able to grow short term growth summer veggies like squash in your zone.

If your zone is 9A, it's too hot for lettuce and peas now. You can plant the lettuce when it cools down. I plant English peas in December or January. I go by what the seed pkt. says for harvest length and go by your first frost date. I'm going to plant tomato seeds this week in 8b.

Generally for a 9, summer crops can go in early-mid August...early-mid September for most winter crops. Some stuff, especially with really long or really short maturity dates may play by different rules (aka, radishes or lettuces you might want to wait until late Sept/early Oct).

Depending on the intensity of your August days, you might need to provide a little shade and/or extra water in the seedling stage or until it cools off.

I should say about the summer crops that a mid/late July planting would be more ideal than a early/mid-August planting...you might want to avoid growing a watermelon, for instance.
