Mulched asparagus last year and ended up with beetles!

I have access to tons of leaves, and got a (free) leaf sucker/grinder at a yard sale.
Last fall I cut back my gus about November, cleared everything out, added chopped up leaves and ended up with asparagus beetle damage (never did see the beetles!)in the spring!
Reading an article on asp beetles, it seems that I DON'T want to mulch them with the leaves as it seems to be a nice hiding place for those beetles to hide until spring when we are salivating for fresh yummy asparagus!
With a good wash, they are still good, but I'd rather have perfect gus! LOL
Will I be OK adding a couple of bags of composted chicken manure after I cut back this year? I know they need SOME yummies to produce well, but it seems chopped leaves are not the answer!
What say you? Nancy
