It should work. Just as long as the male flower isn't too old or young. Squash often cross pollinate between varieties.

I second the previous post. It should work. I read that it's better to pollinate early in the morning and the male pollen should be new and as fresh as possible. Good luck.

It should work with any squash from the Curcubita pepo species, ie just about any summer squash.

Okay then, I'm off in search of a young-ish, virile Pepo flower at lower altitude!

I have had some inedible squashes from cross-pollination. But if your friend's are zukes, too, then you might as well try it. What have you got to lose?

I also find that a flower that was open yesterday, or will be tomorrow, usually works. You can pull the closed petals apart to get at the pollen. Same with female flowers -- so if you have a male one that will open in two days, wait till tomorrow and breed it with a female from today.

Nila, thanks for the tip on using almost open flowers. I was able to get two male flowers from a close neighbor today -- his plants were a fraction of the size of mine, and no female flowers, but lots of male flowers. Go figure.

Are your squash inedible because of cross pollination this year, or were the seeds of cross pollinated fruit?

Cross pollination will not affect any qualities of the subsequent fruits. But it will affect the fruit of plants grown from the cross pollinated seeds.
