I have googled this and can't get a straight answer! I have Big Max pumpkins planted that are about 6 weeks old. The plants look good for the most part but they are not vining yet. I thought for sure they would have been by now. Any ideas?

With my pumpkins the main plant is the vine, with smaller ones off of it. Your plants should look like a vine by now, maybe a few feet long. Pumpkins really take off and yours should be growing several inches per day. Can you post a pic!

New development as of tonight, they have flower buds, but really no vines to speak of, weird.

Cut the growing tip of the plant. That will promote side shoots to grow. Once it gets going, you will hard time controlling it.

Update as of this morning, there is a vine forming on one of the plants. I don't know that I want to promote the vining lol, I'm scared it's going to get out of control. |

That's exactly what I thought you would have by now....a vine (which is the main plant) about 2 feet long. Your best pumpkins will be on the main vine, and a few on the smaller side-vines.
