not sure i get the gist of it, to me if sides are 3' high then soil should be close to that in depth, or you will be reaching down over the sides 2' to plant etc.,.

if you only need soil 1' deep then sides only need to be maybe 1'6"s high?

len, what nancyjane_gardener basically has is a raised planter with a bottom, on legs, and with a total soil depth of 1 foot.
