Cucumber questions

Hi! I'm new to gardening and have a lot to learn, but the forums here are great. This is my first season. I'm doing container gardening since we don't have a lot of space. So my biggest issue right now are my cukes. I have them in a huge container and they were doing very well for the first few weeks. Then the bottom half of the plants started to brown, but the tops are still green. I harvested the cucumbers that were ready (pretty much all of them), and the plants actually got worse. I treated for powdery mildew because of white spots all over the leaves, but it didn't really make a difference. The leaves browned and wilted. They probably aren't salvageable but I'd like to get an idea of what happened so that I don't make the same mistake with my zucchini or future cukes. Also, should I still sift through the soil and save what I can once I break down the container?
