At 50 degrees Id be surprised if your tomatoes had any issues.. Water them!

I don't cover most of my stuff until late August (I'd LIKE to but it's impractical for harvesting each week) and the peppers do survive and grow despite nights in the 40s. The tradeoff is lower yields. However, if it's something that's manageable time-wise, I'd suggest you cover. I prefer using spun-bonded covers because they need no venting and insulate better than poly at night.

I don't have row cover, best I could do would be pots/buckets and I'm a bit worried about breaking the plants since peppers are so brittle.

It rained 1/2" 2 nights ago, another 1/4" last night and a brief downpour this afternoon (haven't checked the gauge so I think the tomatoes should be OK. More rain predicted every day but Tuesday.

I personally find covering tomatoes to be drudgery. I can tell you that where I am at, the night temperatures rarely get out of the 50s and I still get plenty of tomatoes. I would vote not covering right now and save that particular chore for a time when frost is closer.

I don't think that you need to cover anything. 50F is not going to do any harm n 3 to 4 hours. Where I am, a lot of times our nightly lows drop to mid 50s.

But any light cover(sheets, plastic, .. )can keep them from cooling off too much. I would cover maybe just peppers. If they are not very big(as you mentioned) you can invert, bucker, trash cans, cardboard boxes, ..etc over them.

You'll be fine ajsmama. Like mentioned earlier, watering might help. The soil already is at a decent temp and moisture in the soil would definitely regulate that temp.

If you haven't already, MULCH! This will definitely extend your season some later on this fall.
