@ t-bird: have they received same water/care as others?
    Yes.

@ dan_staley: WAG: critter found it.
    Ha!

@ ltilton: I always think cutworms
Very possible, but I put cutworm collars around ALL the cucumbers.

When i dug the soil in that - pretty wet - area I saw a few snails.

Also few days ago, I saw a slug crossing the driveway direction to my tomatoes - which are a few feet away from the cucumbers.

I already put some Sluggo Snail and Slug Bait ($8.48) [Amazon], but I think i will better use beer traps.

The plants removed from the garden - damping off.

The 2 fruits. Lack of water. Plus, the yellowing = over-ripe and ill shut down production.

slugs might indicate too much water....looks like you had the silver mulch over cardboard mulch? Maybe kept the root too wet for too long.

Sorry for the loss.....did any keep going?

@ jean001a: >The plants removed from the garden - damping off.

Some, me included, thought of Bacterial Wilt of Cucurbits, but I could not find neither striped or spotted cucumber beetle.

    >The 2 fruits. Lack of water.

In my other post, Trellis for my cucumbers. missingtheobvious wrote: >About the yellow fruit: cukes can have that shape when there's inadequate pollination...

It might be one or both reasons.

    >Plus, the yellowing = over-ripe and ill shut down production.

Fortunately, the SAME plant with the yellow cuke, is STILL producing new cukes.

I found a few snails BEFORE planting the cucumbers, while digging.

I donâÂÂt think the cause of wilted cucumbers are the snails.

Look at the cucumbers roots! Could a snail do that?

Yep, maybe; anyway I plan to remove the mulch to see what is going on.

    > Sorry for the loss.....did any keep going?

Yes, 12 out of 27 are still ok.

Whatever the reason some cucumbers died, for me the mystery is: why only SOME plants died, when ALL the cucumbers received THE SAME treatment (watering, sun, etc.)

Here are two pictures, the first was taken when I planted the cucumbers, when ALL were ok, the second, today, after over half - 15 out of 27 - died.

Might I suggest "Phytophthora capsici" It's the only thing I can think of which produces roots like you have shown.
Not a pleasant problem to deal with. Suggest you Google and have a read.

Pretty scary this Phytophthora capsici. I will rotate a few fungicides. Tx.

Daniel, what sort of work have you done on the garden soil? From the pictures, it looks somewhat compacted and without much organic matter. Before you put up the trellis, how far down did you fork the soil, and did you mix in any compost? Was anything growing there before?

I lost most of my curcubits to Squash Vine Borers. THough they usually avoid cukes. Any orangy, sawdust material on the vine?
