| You have no idea how happy this newbie gardener is this morning. After 5 weeks of trying to deter a groundhog, my nephew brought over a trap and said when caught he would remove it. That was 6 days ago! It took 6 long agonizing nights to finally catch Doug as my daughter affection ally calls it. So my nephew is coming to take it away. I can rejoice and replant! Compost the half gnawed veggies! And pray I am done with this problem at least for this year. I read everything on this sight about the dang pests hoping I could find the magic answer I am just thrilled as I felt like I was leaving my babies in the muddle of a battle field each and every night. Ahhhhh today is a new day!!!
Happy gardening!

| There's hope! I've had traps out for the corn-raiding squirrel, but so far no luck. |

I certainly can share your joy. I used to have a ground hog living next to my garden. My corns were gone, my melon were gone... etc. We tried put water hose into its hole, no use; tried smoke it out, no use; tried to trap it, no use... Finally we put an electric fence around, still the corns were gone, the melon were gone. The electric fence only ggod for few days after you cut the grass. The ground hog is much smarter animals. The next spring it came out the hole with 4 babies... Oh, boy. We finally decide to move the garden somewhere else. Congrats! |

| Whenever I've had a ground hog show up, I take the attitude that my garden is not big enough for the two of us, and I'm not leaving. It's war!! |

| Keep your eyes peeled, I caught my Doug last year, I was so pleased with myself, then a week later I saw one of Doug's cousins in my garden. Got rid of him, too. This spring I dug an 18" trench around my fence, and put up hardware cloth so they were deterred from digging under my fence. |

| Hi Michele - I do plan to upgrade my fencing in the spring, I had planned on putting in chicken wire fence, curious why you chose hardware cloth? And is that the same as the garden cloth you lay to keep out weeds? That doesn't seem strong enough to me. I do not want to have this problem again next year. |

| Hi Lindalu, no hardware cloth is galvanized steel, not similar to weed blocker. I've heard that chicken wire degrades pretty quickly, as it's very thin. Hardware cloth is quite a bit stronger. It's wire mesh. It's also quite a bit more expensive than chicken wire, but it's a big time commitment to dig a trench all around the garden, so I figured I only wanted to do it once. Also, as you know, once you're invaded by groundhogs, you get pretty determined to find a way to keep them out! I have a 6' cedar fence around the permeter of the garden, so I dug down 18" around it, put in the hardware cloth, and stapled it to the cedar fence with a staple gun. I purchased the hardware cloth in 25' roles at HD in the fencing section. |
