Stop planting watermelon in the upper Midwest..our weather is wack!! >_This is my 2nd year gardening, & my 1st year planting Sugar baby. I don't even have flowers from them, but 2 of the first watermelon flowers (that bloomed this morning) were Crimson Sweet. We need some more dry heat!!

She left behind one small child, still growing on the vine.

Both this year and last year my sugar babies grew pretty well and flowered well, last year set two fruits, this one just one. But then both of them up and wilted pretty much overnight.

It is planted next to my cukes, so wilt seems likely to me. Though I haven't seen too many cuke beetles and my cukes are all thriving and overgrowing their trellis.

Watermelons aren't normally much bothered by bacterial wilt. There is something called for obvious reasons "sudden wilt".

I'm in your area and have given up on watermelons, too. Just not worth the space and bother.

U MUST have timed your plantings correctly, cuz I never do start indoors. I like to directly sow em in the soil, pray over em, and let things happen.

I started one indoors, but planted it too early and it got killed in a cold snap. This one came from a local nursery.

Yellow dolls have done great for me. This is my first time growing melons and i have gotten 8 melons so far off 3 plants. My kids love them. they are 5 to 7 pounds and yellow on the in side and super sweet.

I've managed to get some Yellow Dolls some years. If I were growing watermelons again, that's the one I'd pick.
