So I have a large area is my garden where I pulled my beets a few weeks ago and my green beans that are done producing. My cucumbers have died so they got pulled too. It's a large open area now. I was going to give up gardening for the year (first time and didn't go so well) but I feel like ik wasting the area and could grow something into fall. What would be something that might grow in time this late into aug, is there anything? Only thing left in my garden is tomatoes and peppers that are still going. Thanks

Many "leafy greens" grow well into late fall Swiss Chard, Spinach, chinese greens If you give then a hooped row cover they can last well into winter - kick the snow off to harvest.

Why not plant garlic for next year? Or maybe a cover crop to boost the soil for next year.

Myself, I wish Home Depot didn't officially declare it too late to bother keeping the seed rack in their ample space or I'd plant some spinach.. instead I made do with lettuce, chard, and I planted some Mr. Big peas they seem to be doing ok. The broccoli and brussels sprouts I planted last month seem like they will be failure... the broccoli was doing ok but was eaten by pests... pest pressure is very high.

Just order online from a seed company. You will get them in a few days.

Carrots are Great tasting when planted now and harvested from TGing thru Feb. I find them much sweeter than summer carrots (Nanites variety). Just keep them well weeded and they can be used until the soil freezes up too hard. I also leave a few in the ground to regrow tops and bloom next spring for attracting beneficial insects. Spinach is also good to plant now, after a brief fall picking it's very winter hardy and will give you another early picking next March. Others goodies are collards, beets, kale, turnips, and broc & cabbage (both as transplants). For the first time I planted lettuce and peas this past week to see if they do well here in my Z-7 local.
